Plants small, shoots 450 to 700 (840) µm; BUL1 with 1 unlobed (but can be toothed, normally near the base) ventral segment + 1 ventral saccate segment, BL1 of 2 saccate segments, leaf-lobule cylindrically helmet-shaped, inflated throughout, lying parallel to and juxtaposed to the stem; median cells of leaf-lobe with concave-sided trigones and no intermediate thickenings, each with 2, rarely 3 small oil-bodies; autoicous; perianth 3-keeled, smooth (this study, Schuster 1992).
Geographic distribution: Ranging from the tropics of northern South America through to southeastern United States (Schuster 1992).
Notes: Schuster (1991) described a variety, F. kunzei var. maritima known from mature mangrove stands, Florida.
