Geographic distribution: Hattori (1976a) originally described this variety from Borneo, and Hattori (1982b) reported it as a new record for New Guinea.
Notes: Hattori (1976b) stated that this variety was easily distinguished from the type variety, as it is bisexual and the androecia usually occur near the gynoecia, and in the type variety the plants are unisexual.  Hattori (1982b) noted that the monoicous form “seems to be much rarer than the dioicous form.”   This remains the sole character that distinguishes these two varieties.  Apart from this no other basis is given.  This variety has neither been illustrated nor described in any detail.  From the very limited material available, the plants were morphologically similar to the type variety, including the capsule walls and spores.  Interestingly, the cell surface of the inner layer of the capsule wall had 1-2 large pores forming deep indentations, which are identical to those of the type variety; apart from the species complex of F. junghuhniana these depressions are not known in any other species of subg. Microfrullania.
