Notes: Hattori (1974b) provided an extensive description and illustrations of the species based on the original material from which the species was described. Verdoorn (1930a) distinguished var. caduca from the typical variety based solely on the presence of the caducous lobes and the development of marginal rhizoids. The presence of these features has been shown to vary widely in every other species that exhibits these characters. Morphologically, there are no other differences and it is predicted that marginal rhizoids will be found on material of var. caduca and it subsequently will be reduced to synonymy; F. campanulata var. caduca is listed under species of dubious taxonomic status.
