Substrate probably of metamorphic rock; steep high north-facing rock outcrop road cutbank next to small creek; partial shade from canyon live oak, madrone, California bay, plus scattered incense cedar, Douglas-fir; white alder along the creek; outcrop thickly covered by mosses and lots of Sedum spathulifolium, Polypodium calirhiza, Heuchera. In wetter parts of the outcrop close to the creeklet.
Stems bearing multicellular gemmae - these are uncommon.
