In deep, thick mats under overhanging shrubs, edge of vegetation mats and in seepage lines, granitic rock outcrops, Tsuga canadensis, Pinus Pungens, Tsuga caroliniana.
I presume this is what you are calling S. subtile, but it is a bit bothersome in that, the branches of the capitulum have 5-ranked leaves. It does have, however, the rather broadly ovate branch leaves with large pores at the base of the leaf on both surfaces; also, the stem leaves are heavily bordered and the border is rather much broadened at the base. It is from the same ridge as the material I sent you earlier in the summer as £>. subtile, but not from the same mats. The enclosed came from along seepage mats of vegetation on exposed granitic outcrops, more open anymore susceptible to extrme drying. The plants look big to me, which is curious, considering the somewhat less hydric habitat. I would appreciate your opinion and comments.
