Plants matted together, hard to separate. Plants red, with flat, stellate, red capitula. Fascicles 2:2. Stem very light green near top to dark red-brown. Branch cores red. Lower branch leaves translucent light greenish-tan. Branch leaves with large, elliptic pores near apex. Stem leaf 1.3 mm, hyaline cells fibrillose for almost entire length, weaker toward base, with very few pores.
